Due to improved awareness and technology more people are being diagnosed, treated and surviving with cancer.Emerging evidence, however, is indicating that the majority of people with cancer experience 1 or more physical impairments including fatigue, pain, weakness, restricted movement and lymphoedema.

Some cancer survivors feel their physical problems are ‘the new normal’ and may not ask their doctors for help. If left untreated, these impairments have a large impact on lifestyle, quality of life, activities of daily living, employment and participation. It has been found that a leading cause of emotional distress in cancer survivors is physical disability. Read more...

The jaw joint, or temperomandibular joint (TMJ) is formed by the mandible or lower jaw and the temporal bone of the skull. There is a small disc of cartilage in between the joint that acts to promote smooth painless movement of the jaw. The left and right TMJs are special and complicated structures in that they work together to create a very large degree of movement of the mandible. It is one of the most frequently used joints in the body and good function is essential for both general and physiological health. TMJ disorders are very common conditions that can have an immensely negative impact on an individual’s ability to eat, drink and communicate. Follow the link for more

Why Is a Healthy Weight Important?
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health and can help you prevent and control many diseases and conditions. If you are overweight or obese, you are at higher risk of developing serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers. That is why maintaining a healthy weight is so important: it helps you lower your risk for developing these problems, helps you feel good about yourself, and gives you more energy to enjoy life.
Many factors can contribute to a person’s weight. These factors include environment, family history and genetics, metabolism (the way your body changes food and oxygen into energy), and behaviour or habits.
One of the things that we can change from this list is behaviour. This means making changes to the choices we make around food and exercise. Breaking habits can be hard, however with support around you, you have a much greater chance of success. We are starting a HEALTHY WEIGHT CLUB at Revive to be run by our exercise physiologist Ngaire. A mixture of supervised exercise sessions and information to assist you reach and maintain a healthy weight. Register your interest at reception and stay tuned for more details.

Meditation Course

Meditation Course

MEDITATION COURSE

A first taste is mindfulness..

We are holding a meditation course with Micki Mayo. The four week course will be held on August 17th and 24th and September 7th and 14th from 1pm-3pm.
In this beginners course we will explore what Mindfulness is, the nature of the mind, breath awareness, observing sensations, thoughts and emotions.

Practising mindfulness can help us to be less caught up in stress, worry and low mood. It can enhance performance, boost memory and improves both mental and physical health. By helping us develop a greater capacity to engage fully in what we are doing in each moment, life becomes richer, and we learn to be more present.Mindfulness helps us to use our attention differently.

National Diabetes Week 15th to 21st July

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease, placing 6thin the line-up of Australia’s leading cause of death. BUT... the great news is that the type 2 is bothpreventable AND reversible! It is a medical condition where your body does not absorb the sugar out of your blood properly. With too much sugar in your blood you literally start to ROT from the inside out! Type 2 Diabetes is commonly known as a ‘Lifestyle Disease’....yip you got it, poor diet, lack of physical activity & smoking are some of the main contributing factors to this disease. Type 1 Diabetes is where the body does not produce any insulin to take the sugar out of your blood, so these people require daily insulin shots. Click here to continue reading...

Posture and Performance

Pushing through back pain ? Think again…

Good posture can be hard to attain and harder to maintain. It is an ongoing process that requires regular work such as stretching, strengthening and body awareness during work, sport and activities of daily living. Cyclists are particularly good targets of gravity as we perform our sport in a bent over position with little to no weight bearing through our joints.  Complement that with a desk job or school/study and before you know it your body is starting to look like you are riding a bike even when you aren’t. Overall, posture is a reflection of your daily activities. Click here to keep reading....

Mens Health Week

Next week begins the National Men’s Health Week from the 10th to the 16th of June.

It is to raise awareness of the myriad of health conditions and decisions that Men and Boys face in their day-to-day lives. From slip, slop, slap to regular health exams, next week is an opportunity to think about the things we can be doing to improve our health.

One statistic on the health week website postulates “If every man walked for thirty minutes a day, heart attacks would be reduced by 37%”. It is following this premise that we encourage you to think about all the little things you can be doing to improve your health; take the stairs at work, take your dogs for a walk, see us at Revive for that back or knee that you have been putting off seeing someone about, or  join us at Revive for one of a number of different exercise options we offer. There will be a host of community events around Brisbane and Australia throughout next week, follow the link below for further details on times and locations.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a word we all dread to hear. Some see it as an inevitable part of aging; others feel helpless while their pain progressively worsens over time. What we might not realise is that there are many ways in that we can change the impact the condition has on our lives.

Osteoarthritis is most commonly seen to affect the joints of the knees, hips and hands. The condition involves loss of cartilage on the surfaces of our joints and bony outgrowth within the joint; affecting its movement. While the pain often reduces function, this does not always equate to the severity of bony change within the joint.

There are many guidelines (supported by strong evidence) that promotes the use of exercise and manual therapy to reduce pain and improve function. This is where we can help you! It is often misconceived that exercise and activity will only further ‘wear out’ our joints. However, with the right exercise, even patients with very severe osteoarthritis can exercise with no or minimal discomfort. With the right exercise you can strengthen the muscles supporting the knee, manage your weight effectively and may not have to give up the activities that you love doing!
