October '26 is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Pink October: why every dollar matters
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at Revive we're going PINK.
Breast cancer touches so many of us. 1 in 7 Australian women will be diagnosed in their lifetime. That's more than 20,000 Australians every year, about 56 people every single day, and yes, men get it too. Many of the women who walk through our doors have been through it themselves, or have supported a mum, sister or friend who has.
But here's the good news, and it's BIG.
In 1994, only 76% of Australians diagnosed with breast cancer were still alive five years later. Today that figure is over 90%. Since then the death rate from breast cancer has dropped by more than 40%.
That didn't happen by chance. It happened because of research, and research is paid for by people like us.
What donations actually do
Donated dollars pay for the research behind real changes for real women:
- Better genetic testing. Australian researchers found new gene changes linked to breast cancer risk, and the national testing guidelines were updated as a result. That means more women at high risk are picked up earlier.
- New treatments. Australian-funded research on immunotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer (one of the toughest types to treat) helped get that drug onto the PBS in 2023.
- Fewer unnecessary operations. Research on surgical margins now helps women with early breast cancer avoid repeat surgery they don't need.
Still, more than 3,300 Australians die from breast cancer every year. That's 9 people a day. We're not done yet, and we won't be until that number is zero.
Where we come in
As physios and exercise therapists, we see the other side too: the recovery. Getting strength, shoulder movement and confidence back after surgery and treatment is a big part of living well afterwards, and exercise plays a real role during and after cancer care. We love being part of that journey.
