Scoliosis Clinic at Revive
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a progressive, lateral curvature of the spine that can affect both children and adults. In children, it can be a more serious condition because it can rapidly progress as the child grows. It is usually first seen between the ages of 11 and 15, however, it can occur in younger children aged 3 to 10 years.
When the scoliosis develops the spine bends sideways and rotates along the vertical axis. These changes have cosmetic and physiological effects with long-term consequences which may result in significant health problems with severe curves.
Some signs of scoliosis include:
- poor posture and visible curvature of the spine
- shoulder and rib humping in ‘The Forward Bend Test’
- Muscle weakness
- Spinal and pelvic pain
- In rare cases scoliosis can lead to heart and lung problems
Screening for Scoliosis
Until recently screening was performed to a variable extent in government and non-government schools in Australia but because of financial restraints these programs have largely been abandoned. Scoliosis can easily be diagnosed by a medical professional and if treatment is required, the earlier it is undertaken, the better the long term result.
Revive is now offering a 15-minute gap free scoliosis screening and assessment open to kids, teens and adults of all ages. Our Physiotherapists, trained in providing this service will screen for scoliosis and spinal curvatures and provide advise on treatment or refer for investigation if needed. Further management can include a full musculoskeletal assessment and designing a Scoliosis Specific Exercise Program.
Specific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis
Scoliosis specific rehabilitation and exercise programs can be very effective in managing curvatures of up to 30 degrees to help reverse the curve to a point, halt progression, improve postural alignment and strengthen the core. In fully grown adults with Scoliosis, this method can be effective in decreasing pain, improving strength, flexibility and stabilizing the spine to improve your quality of life.
If you are currently receiving treatment for scoliosis such as bracing, are about to undergo or have had spinal surgery, our individually designed programs can be used in conjunction to help you achieve the best possible results.
