Why is physiotherapy important for incontinence and constipation?

Incontinence and constipation can stem from a variety of issues but often involves your pelvic floor muscles. A physiotherapist can assess whether your pelvic floor is overactive, underactive/weak or not coordinated with your bladder/bowel.

You might notice:

  • Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or exercise
  • Strong urgency or needing to go to the toilet very frequently
  • Difficulty emptying your bladder or feeling like it doesn’t empty fully
  • Accidental leakage of stool or wind
  • Constipation or regularly straining to open your bowels
  • Pelvic pain or pressure that comes with bladder or bowel symptoms
  • Changes after pregnancy such as leaks, heaviness, or reduced control
  • Avoiding exercise or social activities because of bladder or bowel worries

Our goal is to help you feel understood, supported, and empowered with a treatment plan tailored to you and your goals.

Your physiotherapy program may include:

  • Pelvic floor assessment and treatment – evidence-based techniques to release tension or strengthen where needed
  • Education – so you can better understand your condition and how to support it
  • Exercise and movement therapy – to restore strength, control and confidence
  • Reduce medications and likelihood of surgery - improve your function so you don't need to rely on other interventions
  • Relaxation and breathing techniques – to reduce tension and pain flare-ups

What to Expect

Your journey begins with a thorough assessment where we listen to your concerns, examine your movement, and identify the root cause of your symptoms.

We begin the assessment by taking a thorough history. We need to know when your symptoms started and what your current concerns are. You may feel that you have an extensive story - that's okay! It is important to understand the full background of what has led to your appointment. Sending through any gynaecological or bladder/bowel history such as doctor's letters or surgical notes can be extremely helpful.

In most cases, the best way to assess pelvic floor function is by conducting an internal pelvic or vaginal examination. Please let us know if you are comfortable with this.

We focus not just on symptom relief, but on empowering you to return to the activities you love—stronger and more confident than before.

We work with GPs, Specialists, Surgeons, Allied Health, Work Cover, NDIS, DVA and Private Health Funds
