Lymphatics and your health - -could sluggish lymphatic flow be impacting your health?
Lymphatics, Perimenopause & Menopause: The Missing Piece in Women’s Health
Perimenopause and menopause are often associated with hormonal changes, hot flushes, sleep disruption, and mood shifts. But one system that is rarely talked about—and plays a surprisingly important role—is the lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system plays a vital role in fluid balance, immune function, and clearing metabolic waste. During perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen levels can influence circulation, connective tissue, and inflammation—placing greater demand on this system and, at times, slowing it down.
Why the Lymphatic System Matters During Menopause
As hormonal levels shift, many women experience:
- Fluid retention and swelling (legs, abdomen, face)
- Increased inflammation and a feeling of “puffiness”
- Slower recovery from exercise or injury
- Changes in fat distribution and tissue texture
- Digestive sluggishness, including bloating and constipation
When the lymphatic system becomes less efficient, these symptoms can become more noticeable—often contributing to that common feeling of heaviness or being “out of balance” in your body.
Movement, Breathing & Lymphatic Flow
Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the heart. It relies on:
- Muscle contraction
- Diaphragmatic breathing
- Regular movement
During menopause, fatigue, joint pain, and lifestyle changes can reduce activity levels—leading to slower lymphatic flow.
This is where physiotherapy becomes incredibly valuable.
How Physiotherapy Supports Lymphatic Health
At Revive, we take a whole-body approach to care. Physiotherapy can support lymphatic flow through:
Targeted Exercise Programming
Clinical exercise and Pilates-based movement activate the body’s natural “pump” system, helping move lymph fluid and reduce stagnation.
Breathing Techniques
The diaphragm plays a key role in lymphatic drainage. Improving breathing patterns can significantly enhance fluid movement through the
body.
Manual Therapy
Hands-on techniques can reduce tissue congestion, improve mobility, and support areas where fluid tends to accumulate.
Education & Daily Strategies
Small, consistent habits—movement, posture, and recovery strategies—can make a significant difference in how your body feels day to day.
Lymphatic Massage & Digestive Health
Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle, rhythmical technique that supports fluid movement and reduces congestion within the body.
Importantly, lymphatic massage around the abdomen can also play a role in improving digestive function.
During menopause, constipation and bloating are common due to hormonal changes, reduced gut motility, and increased stress. Gentle abdominal lymphatic techniques can:
- Stimulate lymphatic flow through the abdominal region
- Support the function of the digestive organs
- Encourage bowel motility
- Reduce bloating and abdominal discomfort
When combined with appropriate hydration, movement, and breathing strategies, this can be a highly effective and natural way to support gut health.
Supporting Lymphatic Flow at Home
One of the most empowering aspects of lymphatic care is that there are simple techniques you can do yourself.
Dry brushing and self-lymphatic massage are excellent tools—but technique and order matter.
The key principle is: clear the main drainage points before moving fluid towards them.
Start by gently stimulating:
- Neck (above the collarbones)
- Armpits (axilla)
- Groin
Then move to the limbs and abdomen using light, sweeping strokes directed towards these areas. Pressure should always be gentle—this is not deep tissue work.
Incorporating abdominal self-massage into your routine can also support digestion and reduce that sluggish, bloated feeling many women experience during this stage.
As part of our “Thrive Through Menopause” program at Revive, we will be teaching these techniques in practical workshops and supporting women with tools and products, including those from Chelsea Jean, to help build simple, effective routines at home.
A Whole-Body Approach
The key message is this: symptoms like swelling, heaviness, and digestive sluggishness are not just something you have to put up with.
They are often a sign that your body needs support.
With the right combination of physiotherapy, clinical exercise, lymphatic massage, and simple daily self-care strategies, you can improve how your body feels and functions—helping you move through perimenopause and menopause with greater ease and confidence.
At Revive, we’re here to support you to move well, feel well, and live well at every stage of life.
