Pilates and Clinical Exercise
"Pilates is a tried and tested form of exercise that is "here to stay"
The original work of Joseph Pilates has been modified and modernised to create an intelligent, graceful and powerful form of exercise. "Clinical Pilates" has been created to address the need for specific and effective medically and scientifically based exercise therapy.
Either performed on specialised equipment or on the mat, Pilates, if performed regularly will give you a sense of relaxed invigoration. It
focuses the mind, re-energises the body and improves your general health and well-being. Stott Pilates best summarises this as
"Intelligent Exercise, Profound Results".

Our clinical pilates sessions
These encompass pilates based exercises, functional movement retraining and other clinically relevant exercises performed either one on one or in small groups.
Following an initial assessment we develop your individual program tailored specifically to your needs.
At Revive we use Pilates influenced, floor and gym based exercises along with a range of rehabilitation tools to deliver our Clinical
Exercise Therapy Sessions (CETS).
We use a wide range of equipment for exercises and stretches including the Reformer, dura discs and other balance equipment, Cadillac, Spine Corrector, bosus, ladder barrel and more. We also have other therapeutic equipment, Swiss balls and a wide range of gym machine weights.
Getting started:
We start with a thorough assessment when we look at your posture, check an existing musculoskeletal issues and create a plan with you to ensure we address your specific goals. We then develop your program and start teaching the basics of ETS/Clinical Pilates. Following your initial session you then carry out a further 2 hours on on one either with a Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist or Instructor. Once your therapist feels you are ready you can then move into small group sessions.
We may advise that you also need to have some physiotherapy along with starting ETS - we will guide you with your bookings to help you find the best plan and pathway.
Revive Group Pilates Step-By-Step Guide
At Revive, we strongly recommend clinical exercise therapy sessions for anyone with musculoskeletal or medical issues such as back or neck pain, fibromyalgia, joint pain or stiffness, and pregnancy.
When starting clinical exercise therapy sessions, we have a basic requirement that you complete three hours of one-on-one training with a Physiotherapist.
- During the first session you will be assessed and taught the basic principles of good exercise form and your program will be formulated with your specific needs in mind.
- You will learn your individual program in 2 x 1:1 sessions where you can ask questions, get comfortable and tweak things where necessary. This is designed to build your confidence and increase the safety of you and others in the groups
- Once your Physiotherapist is satisfied that you are ready, you are able to participate in sessions with up to three other clients for your concurrent exercise treatment on specialised equipment under close guidance. Some people may prefer to continue exercise therapy sessions one-on-one for the closer attention of the Physiotherapist.
- It is ideal to have a REASSESSMENT session (1hr) with a physiotherapist or EP every 10-12 sessions. This session will be a chance for you refocus towards the same or new goals, make some exercises more difficult, get new exercises or test your strength and function. This may be around stability, flexibility, pain or strength to give you feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is a therapeutic, assessment-led exercise approach delivered by Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists. It combines Pilates-based movements, functional strength and clinically relevant rehab exercises to improve mobility, strength, balance and movement control, tailored to your body and goals.
What is the difference between Clinical Pilates and a Pilates class (or gym Pilates)?
Clinical Pilates is individualised and clinician-supervised, with exercises chosen and progressed based on your assessment, symptoms and goals. Many gym or studio Pilates classes are general programs where everyone follows similar exercises with limited individual modification for injury, pain or rehab needs.
Is Clinical Pilates good for back pain?
For many people, yes. Clinical Pilates is commonly used for lower back pain and recurring flare-ups because it builds trunk and hip strength, improves control and posture, and gradually increases your tolerance to movement and load—based on what your body needs.
Can Clinical Pilates help with injury recovery and rehabilitation?
Yes. Because it can be modified and progressed precisely, Clinical Pilates is widely used for rehab from common issues like back/neck pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, knee pain, tendon injuries, and post-surgical strengthening—with clinician guidance for safe progression.
Is clinical exercise therapy helpful for chronic pain?
Yes. Individualised, supervised clinical exercise can help reduce flare-ups and improve function by rebuilding strength, mobility and movement confidence with a graded approach that suits persistent or long-term musculoskeletal pain.
Do I need a referral to start Clinical Pilates?
No referral is required—you can book directly. If you're using a funded scheme (e.g., GP Care Plan, WorkCover, TAC/CTP), requirements can vary and we can help you understand what you need.
Do I need to do 1:1 sessions before joining group Clinical Pilates at Revive?
Yes. To ensure safety, correct technique and the best results, Revive requires three hours of 1:1 sessions with a Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist (an initial assessment plus two 1:1 sessions). This allows your clinician to create and teach your personalised program before you progress into small group sessions (max 4 people).
Is Clinical Pilates covered by private health insurance?
It can be. If sessions are delivered and billed as Physiotherapy or Exercise Physiology, rebates may apply depending on your health fund and level of cover. We can explain how your sessions are structured so you can confirm rebates with your insurer.
How many Clinical Pilates sessions will I need to see results?
Many people notice improvements within 4–6 sessions, especially with consistent attendance. Longer-term results like better strength, posture and fewer flare-ups often build over 8–12 weeks, depending on your condition and goals.
Is small group Clinical Pilates still individualised?
Yes. Your program is still based on your assessment and progression plan. With small groups capped at 4, your clinician can coach technique, adjust exercises, and safely progress your program over time.
