Womens Health physiotherapy

Women's Health Physiotherapy at Revive focuses on managing pelvic floor disorders, incontinence and pre and post natal muculoskeletal conditions.  Our therapist in the city is trained to evaluate and treat dysfunctions specific to women that may not be addressed at your general practitioner or obstetrician's office.

Conditions address include:

  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control, urgency and frequency)
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pelvic floor and abdominal muscle weakness - which can manifest in many ways from back and hip pain to painful intercourse, prolapse and incontinance.
  • Pre and post natal care - including education and prevention of pelvic floor and postural dysfunctions.

37% of Australian women and 13% of Australian men experience incontinence

Incontinence is NOT an inevitable consequence of aging

Ask yourself thes equestions regarding incontinence:

  1. When you laugh, sneeze, cough or exercise, do you sometimes leak a small amount of urine?
  2. Do you have a sudden, strong urge to pass urine?
  3. Do you arrange your daily routine around where the nearest toilets will be, or know where most public toilets are located?
  4. Do you urinate more than 6-8 times during the day?
  5. Do you wake twice or more during the night to go to the toilet?
  6. Have you given up activities due to fear of bladder leakage?

If you have answered yes to any of the above questions, you have a treatable problem that will not improve without management and may actually become worse with time.

Just call the studio to make an appointment with Lori our Women's Health Physio if you are noticing any of the above symptoms - the sooner you address them the shorter the time will be to resolve them.

PRE AND POST NATAL

Regular exercise during pregnancy is recommended to maintain strength and energy, prevent pain and swelling, improve sleep and help with a quicker recovery after childbirth.  While the entire body goes through many physical changes, one of the greatest and most obvious changes is the expansion of the abdominals to make room for the baby to grow.  Your pelvic floor will also stretch with the weight of the baby during pregnancy and stretch during childbirth.
While your muscles stretch around your core and pelvis, they can also become very weak and lead to low back pain and pelvic joint pain during and after childbirth, an increase in pain during labour and a slower recovery after childbirth.

While abdominal crunches and curls are a big no-no during pregnancy, specific pilates exercises can address all of the above physical challenges you may face, as well improving strength throughout the upper body to help with the physical demands of a new baby.

Equipment pilates at Revive is individualized to suit your needs of your changing body and provides more options for exercises while you are limited in which positions you can safely and comfortably get into.  It is also a great option for post-natal recovery as the resistance can be used to break an exercise down and make it easier for you to re-learn how to control your body while you regain your core and pelvic floor strength.

Typical issues seen for physiotherapy during pregnancy include:
-low back and mid back pain
-pelvic joint pain
-hip pain
-carpal tunnel syndrome
-swelling of hands/feet
-incontinence
